UPF Information

Ultra-Violet Protection factor ( UPF ) relates to textiles and therefore clothing and indicates the amount of protection from UV light passing through the fabric.

UPF 40-50+ is the highest protection category under AS 4399:1996 which affords 40-50+ times the burning time on the skin eg if the burning time at 12 noon in summer is 8 minutes, then you multiply 8 times ie 50 UPF = 400 minutes or over 6 hours protection before burning. If the protection is 40 UPF at the same time then it is 40 times 8 = 320 minutes which gives over 5 hours protection before burning.

Please take note that if the protection afforded by clothing does not have the highest level of protection, ie UPF 5- 20 then protection may be as low as less than an hour to less than half a day, so we recommend as do authorities to choose clothing in the highest category of 40-50+ UPF.

Please note: UPF protection is only under areas covered by the textile/clothing when not stretched, not wet or in a new state, therefore, other areas of the body need to be covered or protected and the state of the clothing needs to be regularly inspected so that maximum protection is maintained.
